Kodomo Edu is an international school where we help discover each child’s talent and foster their [0-1] brain development. We believe that all children are born with unique talents. At Kodomo Edu, we deepen children’s “likes” through learning completely based on their interests. Instead of solving a given problem, children will acquire the ability to seek the problem themselves and solve the problems together with peers. We also believe that [0-1] brain development is important, especially in a future globalized society. Kodomo Edu supports children in their process of blossoming into beautiful flowers in the future.

About

Nowadays, we are in a transitional period. Education is beginning to reform in a world where politics, the economy, the environment and so forth are also undergoing changes.
In the educational system until now, academic scores are important, and children are overwhelmed by the unpredictable changes of the times. In our current period, the ability to survive in the future is more important than scores measured by numbers.
Kodomo Edu provides an environment where children can nurture these following six strengths.
[Imagination] - To imagine the future
[Curiosity] - To get excited by new things in their world
[Thinking power] - To analyze the substance of things
[Creative power] - To create new things
[Self-respect] - To believe in one’s self under any circumstances
[Social skills] - To believe, proceed, and implement

Why Kodomo Edu ?

Education based on Reggio approach

At Kodomo Edu, we support children’s education through the Reggio approach. The Reggio approach – an educational method originated in Italy - is a learning philosophy that explores children's interests through projects in an environment that respects "children's rights". It is one of the popular education methods that have been adopted by company kindergartens of Google and Disney headquarters in the US.
The characteristic of Reggio approach is:
- Group projects
- Artwork using a wide variety of natural materials
- "Documentation" that records the learning process of children
Especially important element is the “Image of the child.”
In the Reggio approach, children are perceived to be intelligent, creative, and authentic; everyone is believed to have a valuable personality. In the Reggio learning environment, we respect children and give them a leading role in their learning. Teachers approach children with all of these things in mind.

Program led by domestic and foreign professionals

Kodomo Edu welcomes Alexandra Milani, the author of "Reggio Approach" as an outside consultant. We also collaborate with a Reggio teacher from Los Angeles, who has skillfully implemented Reggio approach. Since the curriculum is created by a team familiar with the Reggio approach, we do our utmost to support the development of children's ability to think and express themselves.

An environment that student can continue learning from kindergarten to elementary school

At Kodomo Edu we have two programs – Our preschool program for 2-6 years old, from 9am and our after school English program for elementary 1st -3rd grade students.
In the preschool program, children are encouraged to find their own ways of expressing themselves, while in our after school English program, children can deepen their expression and thoughts with hybrid programs of Art and English classes.

International education through exchanges with overseas affiliated schools

Kodomo Edu is collaborating with Voyages Preschool in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, USA.
We hold Zoom meetings once or twice a month while interacting with each other using messages videos, photos, and mail. In our Zoom meetings, we ask various questions and teach each other our favorite songs. Even in the current Corona pandemic, talking with overseas friends is a good opportunity for children to look at the world and the society. “Why is it morning here, but evening in your school?” , “Are you also wearing mask?”, “Woah, do you have a dog in your school!?”.
Through the Zoom meetings, children make many discoveries. “When I meet friends for the first time, I’m nervous! It’s scary!” “Do you also feel the same way?”. Even though they live in different countries, they realize there are things in common. In this sense, Kodomo Edu will be a gateway to abroad for the children.

Confirming the child’s growth through 10 Criteria

Each semester, Kodomo Edu holds a meeting with parents. An assessment of 10 criteria is used in the interviews. We select 10 different skills of early childhood development as well as abilities necessary in the future and share the current developmental stage of the child with parents. The term "assessment" is not a so-called "report card", but a discussion between the school and the parents (family) about the abilities that should be nurtured within the child and within the surrounding environment during early childhood. (Please note that for students who come to school fewer days, the meetings may be twice a year.)
Parents who do not know how to support their children's learning at home and what kind of words to use with their children can look forward to having this opportunity to resolve their concerns.

Program

Preschool Program

Every child is full of potential! The Reggio approach supports children’s feeling of “I want to try”. Every day children are exposed to various materials prepared by professional Reggio Approach teachers to stimulate their sensibilities. By discovering a child’s natural way of expression, the 0->1 brain development is fostered. We also value the experience and exploration activities of going out to the park on a day with a good weather, directly touching and observing nature.

3 steps to 0->1 brain development
1. Finding interest
At Kodomo Edu, we value the voices of all children. And the voice of children's "curiosity" leads to the children’s projects at school. The idea of "Self-respect" is encouraged in this environment where each child can feel that they are being treated with great care.
2. Exploring as a team
In order to deepen what children are interested in, teachers ask various questions which also allows children to improve their problem-solving skills, creativity and thinking skills. Also, exploring and discussing with the team helps children acquire “social skills” that are necessary for the coming era.
3. Reflect with everyone -> and think again
By looking back at what they have made, students can come up with ideas for their future project. This spiral helps deepen the children’s critical thinking skills.

Afterschool Program

Based on the important essence of the Reggio approach - "Expression", we have developed a program unique to Kodomo Edu. Our slogan is "Express Yourself!", Learning through the hybrid class of Art, which improves their thinking skills and English that fosters their English self-expression, children will eventually be able to find their way of expressing themselves. By creating an environment for self-expression, we raise "children with" voices. ”

1. Deepening the thinking - "Art class"
1. Building together (project)
Teachers and students discuss about what they want to do, what they want to try making, and could spend weeks making the project together. At Kodomo Edu, since the ideas from the students are important, there is no class where students make what the teacher instructed to do.
2. Shaping you own ideas (individual table)
Children’s minds are always full of ideas. Individual tables are a place to shape those ideas, letting inspiration motivate the children.
2. Improving the self-expression - “English class”
Instead of “This is a pen.” or ”I love Sushi so much!”
We aim to have English practice that could immediately be used at overseas local school.
(1) Learning the basics of English systematically with textbook
(2) Learning the phrases from the book and TV programs
(3) Creating a story on their own (Story Writing)
(4) Talking and performing the stories they created
*Preschool class is programed as age-appropriate including from (1) to (4).
